Matthew Napierala, MD - San Antonio, TXDr. Napierala is honored to join Northeast Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine as an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow. He has advanced training and expertise in treating patients with a wide variety of problems ranging from shoulder dislocations, rotator cuff tears, and end stage shoulder and elbow arthritis to ligament and meniscal tears in the knee. He is experienced in both minimally invasive arthroscopic and open surgical techniques. He also has extensive sports medicine experience, having served as a team physician at both the high school and college levels.

Dr. Napierala grew up in Williamsville, NY and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Case Western Reserve University. He then graduated with honors from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2009.

Following medical school, Dr. Napierala was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army and completed his orthopaedic surgery internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2014, where he served as the Chief Administrative Resident. During his residency he received numerous awards for excellence in academics, teaching and research to include the George E. Omer Research Award and the Norman T. Kirk Award from the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS). Following residency, he served as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (GLWACH) in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He deployed to Iraq and Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as the only Orthopaedic Surgeon in theatre. Upon his return from deployment, he was promoted to Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Podiatry at GLWACH; a position he held for 2 years until his separation from the Army in 2018.

Following his time in the US Army, he was accepted into one of the most prestigious and competitive shoulder and elbow fellowships in the country, training under the mentorship of world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Fredrick Matsen III at the University of Washington. His fellowship training included a special focus on Total Shoulder and Reverse Total Shoulder replacements, the “Ream and Run” procedure, complex revision shoulder surgery and upper extremity fracture management.

Dr. Napierala strongly believes in shared patient decision making. He emphasizes a personalized approach to patient care, creating active partnerships with his patients to achieve the best possible outcomes. He is committed to a compassionate, patient-centered approach to orthopaedic care for every patient.

Dr. Napierala and his wife, Meredith (a San Antonio native), are delighted to return to San Antonio. They have one daughter, Paige, who is two years old. Dr. Napierala is rooted in his faith, as it is an integral aspect of his life and a preeminent part of his daily practice. In his free time, Dr. Napierala enjoys spending time with his family, working out, golfing, and watching sports.

Dr. Napierala is board certified by the American Board of Orthoapedic Surgery (ABOS) and specializes in disorders of the shoulder and elbow, sports medicine, and general orthopaedics. He has advanced fellowship training in reconstruction of all conditions relating to the shoulder and elbow. He is actively accepting new patients.
